The Importance of Breakfast for Women's Hormonal Health
Why Breakfast Matters for Hormonal Balance
In the middle of our busy lives, itās easy for breakfast to fall to the bottom of the priority list, but for women especially, it can have a huge impact on hormonal health and how we feel throughout the day. Letās break down why breakfast is actually one of the most supportive things we can do for our hormones and overall well-being.
What Happens to Our Hormones in the Morning
When we wake up, our bodies naturally experience a spike in cortisol and adrenaline, these hormones are designed to help us get up and moving. This is called the cortisol awakening response. But after a full nightās sleep, our blood sugar is typically low. When we skip breakfast, our bodies have to keep pumping out cortisol to bring our blood sugar back up, which can lead to muscle breakdown, inflammation, and eventually, mood dips or feeling "off" in our bodies.
This cortisol surge, paired with the inflammation that can follow, can throw off key reproductive hormones like estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. Over time, this can make it harder for the body to process and detox excess estrogen, which can lead to hormonal imbalances like estrogen dominance.
Why Breakfast (Especially for Women) is Key
Skipping breakfast isnāt just about energy dips, studies show it can contribute to irregular cycles, more painful periods, and even mood challenges like anxiety and depression. Our hormones are closely tied to how we feel, mentally and emotionally, and starting the day with a nourishing, balanced breakfast (especially one that includes protein!) helps keep blood sugar steady and supports liver and gut health, both essential for happy, balanced hormones.
If breakfast isnāt part of your routine yet, start small. Even a little something in the morning can go a long way in supporting your body. Your hormones will thank you for it!
With love,
